When a natural disaster is a wake up call

It feels surreal, but one month from today, I'll be back in Nepal (!!)

This time, it's my inaugural Wild Insights trip - an intentional, women-led adventure with coaching before and after, to reconnect with genuine flourishing during change or transition.

❗ In case you were wondering, no, the region we're trekking is not the one affected by the tragic flooding you saw on the news last month.

While flooding is common during Nepal's summer monsoon season, this flood was also a ripple effect of the climate changes we're all grappling with in increasingly real ways.

Watching the videos of this and other natural disasters has a deeply emotional impact on me - even if I'm much more likely to be killed by a car 5 miles from my house, there's a much more primal fear that's activated seeing and hearing about these earth-powered events - whether it's tied to water, fire, water or earth.

For example, here in the PNW, we're seeing our own version in real time, with catastrophic, record-breaking wildfires, which had a devastating impact on Spokane and British Columbia this summer. And there's always the threat of the next mega-earthquake (even if I don't like to dwell on it).

So we can we do? Stay in doors and hide under the covers? Keep our kids under our helicopter blades?

I feel the tug sometimes to hide, but I choose to see these disasters as another wake-up call:

❤️ To live with intention, even in the face of fear and uncertainty,

❤️ To be more present to what I already have,

❤️ To make space for more wonder and connection, even if it makes me cry (like the lyrics of one of my favorite songs, Do You Realize?? which always gives me goosebumps!)

❤️ To prioritize my relationships, time in nature, and listening more closely to my body and intuition.

Honestly, I'm also glad we get to go and support Nepal in even a small way through this trip — they need positive stories, and visitors, more than ever right now!

This time, I'm traveling with my eyes wide open again, and just as intentional about how and who I travel with.

And it's the who that I'm really excited for...

I'm bringing all new people with me this time: six amazing women, to be precise. (First trip to Nepal for everyone, and for most: their first multi-day trek, just like me last year!)

We're all at different stages of life, facing different transitions and questions, each with our own sense of what it would mean to flourish more fully — professionally and personally. That's what makes this trip so unique, and powerful.

We're just getting to know each other — two group calls in, most of us still strangers — and learning together. They're helping me put this vision into practice through wonder, intention, listening, and diligence, even as I'm still learning myself.

I have lots of experience in my consulting career to be "building the plane while you're flying it" - and that's exactly what I'm doing with Wild Insights.

Which is why I have marked the dates for our next Wild Insights trek in Nepal:

📅 Mark your calendar: April 24 to May 5, 2027!

I plan to officially open the trip on September 27 with more details soon, but since you're on my email list I'll give you a sneak peak.

  • Travel Dates: Nepal Apr 24–May 5, 2027.
  • Group coaching calls: 90 min once a month Feb, Mar, May, June
  • Investment: $4,800 all-in (includes just about everything except international flights)
  • Trek Type: 8-day teahouse trek (read: we have porters + beds)
  • Difficulty: Moderate–challenging
  • Group Feel: Small & women-only -- for now! (I'm planning trips with other coaches + in locations, so stay tuned)
  • Pre-reqs: No prior trekking experience required — but commitment to preparing is.
  • Mindset: You want the reset & insight AND a way to hold onto it after.

If you're feeling called to step outside your routine and comfort zone, with real accountability alongside a small group of women, I'm here for you.

Regardless, here's to you living with intention, whether that's towards a bigger goal, or right here, right now.

Warmly,

Allie

"I'm scared but I know I can do this." Spoken by my four-year-old daughter one afternoon, as she clung to a gnarly climbing rock at the playground. Funny story: this mirrored my thoughts just days earlier, on my first 3-day backcountry trip when I was summiting Old Snowy, in the Goat Rocks Wilderness near Mt. Rainier. Me, climbing Mt Snowy this summer - trying not to think about falling I don’t like heights. They give me vertigo. So as I navigated the final scramble to the summit, trying not...

My inner judge is a Bitch. Yup. I rarely cry, and she made me cry this week. But honestly? It felt good to cry. There was so much emotion pent up behind my wretched self-judgement that when the tears came I was grateful for the release. Yet despite my misery, it was a good lesson in self-compassion in the end. And I want to share my story, for anyone who has been caught in that terrible loop of judging yourself or a situation you're in, with a few thoughts on how to shut down that inner...

For those who missed my last few pieces in this mini-series, this is my fourth and final reflection inspired by the book Born to Flourish: How New Science and Ancient Wisdom Reveal a Simple Path to Flourishing, written by a pair of world-renowned contemplative neuroscientists. They are at the forefront of the science and practice of flourishing, and much of their work bridges ancient Buddhist wisdom and modern neuroscience, so it sits at a fascinating intersection for me. I'll include a few...
